A town for nuclear workers designed for 33,000 residents will be built in Jizzakh.
Construction of a $9.5 billion integrated nuclear power plant is ongoing in the region.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the work being carried out on the construction of an integrated nuclear power plant and an adjacent modern town in the Jizzakh region.
It was reported that the project, with a total value of $9.5 billion, entered its active construction phase on June 4, 2026. To date, excavation work for the reactor building has been completed, with over 1 million cubic meters of soil removed. A portion of the foundation slab has been poured with 916 cubic meters of concrete.
Currently, 450 workers and specialists, along with more than 100 pieces of specialized equipment, are operating at the construction site.
The project plans to use nearly 3,000 types of products and equipment. According to preliminary estimates, the share of local products amounts to 21 percent, or $1.9 billion. The President emphasized the need to increase this figure, setting the task of raising the share of local products to at least 30 percent, increasing the participation of national enterprises in construction and installation works to 65 percent, and attracting 7,000 local workers and specialists.
Additionally, a proposal was made to establish an industrial zone specializing in construction materials on a 200-hectare area in the Forish district. It is envisaged to host at least 100 joint enterprises and localize production in 15 directions.
As part of the external engineering infrastructure of the nuclear power plant, 388 kilometers of power lines, a 110-kilovolt substation, drinking and technical water pipelines, and automobile and railway roads will be constructed. A task was set to bring the share of local products and services at these facilities to 60–70 percent.
During the construction period, it is planned to build a town for nuclear workers on a 200-hectare area for workers, specialists, and their families. The town is designed for nearly 33,000 residents. It is envisaged to build about 10,000 apartments, including 3,000 apartments in the first phase.
The town will feature schools and preschool education institutions, medical, sports, and cultural facilities, recreational areas, and green spaces. Energy-efficient technologies, alternative energy sources, and "smart" lighting systems will be used in the housing.
During the presentation, it was emphasized that safety and quality would be the top priority in the construction of the nuclear power plant, with all work carried out in accordance with IAEA requirements and international standards. It was noted that from June 22–26, 2026, an IAEA Integrated Review Mission was conducted, which gave a high assessment of the development status of Uzbekistan's national nuclear infrastructure.
Tasks were also defined for the advance training of operators, engineers, and radiation safety specialists who will manage the plant, as well as for strengthening project management and technical oversight.
The President gave instructions to those responsible for carrying out the construction of the nuclear power plant and the nuclear workers' town with high quality, safely, and within the specified deadlines, expanding the participation of local enterprises, and harmoniously organizing infrastructure and personnel training efforts.
