“If there is no deal, we will destroy Iran”: Trump spoke about Iran at the UN

US President Donald Trump said in his speech at the UN General Assembly that if an agreement to stop the war with Iran is not reached, he may continue military operations against the country and destroy Iran, reportedly.

 

According to Trump, US actions against Iran are aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also called on other countries to economically isolate Iran and force it to negotiate.

 

«I have to make an important decision. Will an agreement with Iran be reached, and will this agreement allow them to recover and become an even stronger state than before? Or will I quickly destroy the Islamic Republic?» — Trump said.

 

While saying that a peace agreement with Iran could be reached, the US president indicated that he expects such a deal to be concluded after the congressional elections in November.

 

Trump also defended US military dominance in the Western Hemisphere. He presented the policy being pursued toward Venezuela as proof that the US does not allow foreign threats in areas close to its territory.

 

In his speech at the UN, Trump also touched on US policy toward Mexico and Cuba. He called Mexico the center of cartel violence and urged the country's government to restore control over its territory. On the issue of Cuba, he said Washington is seeking to fundamentally change the situation in the country.

 

Trump also criticized the UN, mentioning the work the US is carrying out to reduce bureaucracy in the organization. He also emphasized that the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over US military personnel.

 

Trump's appearance at the UN took place several days after a UN fact-finding mission statement that US forces may have committed war crimes in two strikes in Iran. 

 

The mission reported that one of the strikes hit a girls' school in the city of Minab in southern Iran.

 

After his speech, Trump is scheduled to meet with more than 11 heads of state and senior representatives. Among them are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Venezuela's interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, and representatives of Persian Gulf states — the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar.
