Military deaths in Kazakhstan: 5 officials detained
Investigative actions are also continuing to identify other suspects.
In Kazakhstan, following the deaths of servicemen during the "Hazar Qorg'on — 2026" exercises, 5 officials of the Defense system were detained. They are suspected of negligent attitude toward service and violation of ship handling rules.
Among those detained are the Chief of Staff — First Deputy Commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces, two military unit commanders, a marine corps company commander, and boat commanders.
All suspects have been placed in the temporary detention isolator of the Aktau city police department.
On September 24, during naval exercises held off the coast of the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan, the weather sharply deteriorated and strong winds were observed. As a result, 17 servicemen were carried out to sea. During search and rescue operations, three servicemen were rescued, while 14 died.
Currently, investigators are examining what decisions were made by responsible persons in organizing and conducting the military exercises, whether safety requirements were observed, whether weather conditions were taken into account, the technical condition of the boat, and the actions of officials.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the military-investigative unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan. The actions of the suspects will be given a legal assessment in accordance with the procedure established by law.
The investigation is under the supervision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office. Investigative actions are also continuing to identify additional suspects.
