Explosion in a building in Afina: six people died
An explosion is said to possibly be related to gas infrastructure.
A two-story residential building collapsed as a result of an explosion in Athens' bustling tourist area of Plaka. Six people died as a result of the incident.
According to the Greek fire safety service, rescuers found the bodies of six people under the rubble. They were an elderly couple who lived in one apartment and four tourists who resided in another apartment.
The fire safety service's investigation unit is working at the scene to determine the causes of the explosion. Reports have come in that a smell of gas was detected in the area. The mayor of Athens stated that the explosion may be related to gas infrastructure.
According to police information, the deceased tourists were two American couples. They were supposed to fly from Athens at 15:00 on Friday, but did not come to the airport.
As a result of the explosion, nearby houses, shops, and cars were also damaged. Building debris and broken glass were scattered over an area of up to three blocks.
The incident occurred near Athens' famous tourist attractions such as the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus.
