At least 27 people were killed and more than 20 injured in shootings in two towns in South Africa. Police are searching for several suspects in connection with the incidents.
The first shooting occurred on Saturday evening in the town of Vedela, southwest of Johannesburg. At least 17 people were killed and 15 injured as a result of the attack at a tavern.
According to police, armed individuals first opened fire on people gathered outside the tavern, then entered the building and continued shooting. Some customers' mobile phones were also taken during the attack.
The suspects fled the scene in two vehicles. Two other vehicles were set on fire during the incident. Police are searching for eight suspects. They are said to have been armed with AK-47 assault rifles and pistols. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
The second shooting occurred after midnight on Sunday in the town of Lvandle near Cape Town. At least 10 people were killed and 11 wounded as a result of an attack by armed individuals on a shop. Police are searching for several suspects connected to the incident.
These events occurred a few days after a shooting at a party at a house near the city of Durban in which 11 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed.
Violent crimes involving firearms are regularly recorded in South Africa. The government is under pressure, particularly in major cities, to ensure public safety and intensify the fight against gun-related crimes.
