The leader I mentioned will be appointed to Eronga — Trump

In an interview with Axios, US President Donald Trump expressed his opposition to the son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei coming to power in Iran and announced his personal involvement in the process of selecting a new leader.

According to Trump, Ayatollah Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is an undesirable candidate for Washington. The President emphasized that the US opposes the appointment of any successor who would continue Iran's previous policies and stated that if a candidate acceptable to him is not appointed, the United States may have to start another war within five years.

Mojtaba Khamenei has remained a candidate for the supreme leadership since his father's death on February 28. The new leader must be elected by Iran's Assembly of Experts, and on March 4, assembly member Mahmoud Rajabi announced that the process has already begun.

Currently, the country is being governed by a temporary three-member council: Masoud Pezeshkian, head of the judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi.

Experts and publications, including The New York Times, emphasize that Mojtaba Khamenei's appointment could cause internal dissent and opposition from Shia clerics.

Israel has stated that a new leader in Iran who continues previous policies could be a "target for elimination."
