LaGuardia Airport in New York was closed after an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck.

An Air Canada Express flight 8646 arriving from Montreal collided with a ground vehicle while landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport, causing the airport to close, reports Al Jazeera.

New York police informed AFP on Monday that the plane "collided with a Port Authority vehicle."

According to Reuters, the incident resulted in injuries to 4 people. The plane's pilots sustained serious injuries. A sergeant in the fire truck and a police officer suffered broken bones, but their condition is stable. The plane was carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew members; no serious injuries among the passengers have been reported so far.

Flightradar24 reported that the CRJ‑900 aircraft collided with the vehicle at approximately 24 mph (39 km/h) on Sunday night. The aircraft was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it had halted all flights to LaGuardia Airport due to the aircraft emergency. The FAA statement said the airport closure was related to the emergency but provided no further details.

Videos circulating on social media show the aircraft with its nose cone bent upward and damaged.

Additionally, the official website for LaGuardia Airport shows that arriving flights are being diverted to other airports or returned to their point of origin.

New York City's Office of Emergency Management warned the public of possible road closures and transportation delays near the airport.
