Trump wants to reopen the "Alcatraz" prison.

US President Donald Trump has requested $152 million from Congress to restore the former "Alcatraz" prison on Alcatraz Island. DW reports this based on the 2027 budget proposal released by the White House.

It is reported that the document still needs to be approved by the US Congress. According to the plan, the former federal prison, which currently operates as a tourist attraction, will be transformed into one of the most modern penal institutions in the country. Experts estimate the total cost of the renovation work to be up to $2 billion.

According to information, Donald Trump issued an executive order in May 2025 to restart "Alcatraz." It is planned that individuals who have committed serious crimes will be held in this institution. The president explained this initiative as a "symbol of law and order."

The "Alcatraz" prison operated from 1934 to 1963 and is known as one of the most famous and strict prisons in the US. It is located on an island in San Francisco Bay, where escape was considered nearly impossible. Among others, the famous gangster Al Capone served his sentence here. Since 1972, this facility has been operating as a museum.

The main reason for the prison's closure is cited as the high cost of its maintenance. In particular, food supplies had to be delivered to the island by water. Furthermore, the maritime climate led to the rapid deterioration of the buildings.
