Cuba is accelerating the development of solar energy amid fuel shortages and frequent power outages across the country. At least 59 solar power plants have been built in the country over the past two years. Point.md reported on this.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing data from the RenewAtlas analytical platform, reported that at least 41 medium-sized and 18 small solar power parks have been established in Cuba over the past two years. The government plans to increase the number of medium-sized solar power plants to 92 by 2028.
The total capacity of the new solar power plants could reach nearly 1,000 megawatts during peak load times. This is equivalent to nearly one-third of the country's typical electricity demand of 3,200 megawatts.
According to the Cuban government, the share of solar energy in the country's needs has increased from 3 percent at the beginning of last year to nearly 10 percent currently.
The main equipment for solar energy is being supplied from China. According to WSJ, China's exports of solar panels to Cuba increased from $3 million in 2023 to $117 million in 2025. Deliveries of battery storage units have also increased.
Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz stated that part of the solar energy projects is being financed through revenues from nickel exports.
Nevertheless, the problem of electricity supply persists in the country. According to WSJ, millions of residents in Cuba face power supply interruptions almost every day. It was noted that thermal power plants in the country's energy system have been aging for many years, and nearly 16 percent of energy is lost in the electricity transmission networks.
Since the beginning of 2026, Cuba has experienced nationwide power outages at least six times. In particular, major blackouts covering the entire country were recorded on August 2 and 4.
Experts say that fully restoring the energy system after such accidents can take several days. In this process, small grids are first brought online based on solar and hydroelectric plants as well as local generators, and then thermal power plants are gradually connected to the system.
