Heavy flooding occurred in Nepal: the death toll has reached 95.

At least 95 people were killed and 63 injured in a severe flood on the Bhote Koshi River in central Nepal. Hundreds of people remain missing.

 

The flood occurred on Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall. The natural disaster caused widespread destruction in the districts of Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, Tanahun, and Nawalpur. Officials have recovered the bodies of 95 deceased individuals, but their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.

 

According to Reuters, the flood may have been caused by a landslide of mud and rocks triggered by an earthquake in China's Tibet region.

 

As a result of the flood, 19 bridges for vehicle traffic were destroyed, and 40 kilometers of paved roads were damaged. Additionally, critical communication networks were disrupted.

 

Among the missing are 85 security personnel — 44 from the Nepali Army, 28 from the Nepal Police, and 13 from the Armed Police Force. Furthermore, 60 employees working on local hydropower projects, staff of the Rasuwagadhi customs and immigration offices, and 484 tourists — 391 foreign and 93 domestic — have been reported missing.

 

The Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers expressed deep condolences over the casualties and instructed all security forces and relevant agencies to conduct search, rescue, and relief operations at a high state of alert.

 

Residents of downstream riverside areas have been warned of the danger and urged to take precautionary measures. Evacuation of residents to safe locations has begun in some areas.

 

Currently, 63 injured citizens are receiving treatment at TU Teaching Hospital, Rasuva, Trishuli, the National Trauma Center, and Birendra Sainik Hospital.

 

Meanwhile, South Korea is dispatching an emergency joint rapid response team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Fire Agency, and the National Police Agency to Nepal. This follows the disappearance of 8 South Korean citizens at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower station in Rasuva, with another 10 remaining stranded in the area.

 

Rapid response teams from government agencies and companies continue to coordinate rescue operations on the ground. The situation and the extent of the damage are also being assessed.
