According to Reuters, the powerful flow caused by the glacial collapse has claimed the lives of 579 people in Nepal and 5 people in China's Tibet region. In Nepal, 1,924 people are missing, and in Tibet's Gyirong County, 558 people are unaccounted for. Of these, 260 are foreign nationals.
The Red Cross has reported that more than 90,000 people have been affected by the natural disaster.
Rescue operations in Nepal were suspended for nearly three hours after the lake formed by the flood began overflowing into the Lende Hola and Trishuli rivers. Once the danger subsided, operations resumed. However, officials warn that the risk of flooding will persist until the two barrier lakes in the area are completely drained.
Additionally, the bodies of 10 people have been found in India's Uttar Pradesh state from rivers flowing from the Nepalese side.
Although a number of countries have offered search-and-rescue assistance to Nepal, the country's government has so far stated that there is no need for help from foreign groups. India, China, the USA, the UK, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have expressed readiness to send their rescue teams.
