As a result of the incident, 7 passengers died. During rescue operations, most of the passengers were brought to shore.
Turkish Cypriot Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı told the Anadolu Agency that the ferry had 259 passengers and 8 crew members on board.
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said 237 people were rescued alive, seven people died, and 23 people were still being searched for.
The private ferry set off from the port of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus at 12:30 on Sunday, heading to the port of Taşucu in Turkey's Mersin province. Shortly after leaving the port, the ship began taking on water for unknown reasons and capsized.
The incident occurred approximately 4 miles, or 6.4 kilometers, off the coast of Kyrenia. Some reports noted that the ferry was a catamaran-type vessel.
The coast guard and private vessels were involved in the rescue operations. Rescued passengers were brought to the port of Kyrenia and from there taken to hospitals.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul stated in an interview with CNN Türk that contact had been established with 159 passengers from the ferry so far.
