EU will completely phase out Russian gas by the end of 2027 — von der Leyen
The share of Russian gas in EU imports has already shrunk from 45 percent to 12 percent.

The European Union plans to completely stop importing Russian gas by the end of 2027. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her speech at the European Parliament on October 6.
According to her, the share of Russian gas in EU imports has decreased from 45 percent to 12 percent over the past four years. Von der Leyen emphasized that this figure will be reduced to zero by the end of next year.
The head of the European Commission stated that the rejection of Russian gas will be carried out despite the energy crisis in Europe and high energy prices. She noted that since the end of February, gas prices have increased by 140 percent, and the price of diesel fuel has doubled.
According to von der Leyen, the European Union has diversified its gas supply sources and accelerated investments in clean energy.
Earlier, "European Pravda" reported that Europe spent 7.3 billion euros on Russian Arctic gas in the first eight months of 2026. This is more than the amount spent during 2025.
From January 1, 2027, a complete ban on importing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the European Union is expected to come into force. At the same time, certain temporary exceptions have been preserved for gas deliveries to third countries under old contracts.
