Spain has requested emergency funds from the European Union due to the migration crisis in Ceuta.

Spain will request emergency financial assistance from the European Union to address the migration crisis that has arisen in the enclave of Ceuta. The European Commission has announced that it is reviewing Madrid's request on a priority basis. 

 

The Spanish government's request came several weeks after tens of thousands of migrants entered Ceuta en masse from Morocco. During the events at the end of July, more than 70,000 people entered the territory. Most of them later returned to Morocco. 

 

According to European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert, Spain submitted a formal request for emergency funding on August 24. The request is currently being assessed, and a decision is expected to be made as quickly as possible. 

 

The mass migration flow at the end of July placed serious pressure on Ceuta's reception and accommodation capacities. According to official data, dozens of people lost their lives during the events. 

 

At present, several thousand migrants, including unaccompanied minors, remain in Ceuta. Spanish officials must identify the individuals staying in the territory and determine whether they are entitled to international protection. The process of returning those who do not need protection will begin. 

 

In order to accelerate response measures, the Spanish government has also decided to introduce a "unified management" system for Ceuta. It will be led by the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres. The government's main goal is to return as many migrants as possible while complying with legislation and human rights.

 

At the same time, humanitarian assistance will continue for those seeking asylum or who cannot legally be sent back, particularly unaccompanied migrant minors.

 

Ceuta and Melilla are Spain's two enclaves in North Africa and constitute the European Union's only land borders with Africa.
