President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev's cousin, Hero of the Soviet Union Orunbek Yakubov, eliminated over 20 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht during the operation to cross the Oder River in World War II. This was reported by the TASS agency based on archival documents here.
It is reported that Orunbek Yakubov served as the mortar platoon commander of the 248th Rifle Regiment of the 31st Rifle Division.
According to award documents, on January 24, 1945, during the crossing of the Oder River, he supported the infantry by firing his mortar, helping to capture a bridgehead.

Additionally, Yakubov transported mortars to the western bank and participated in repelling seven enemy counterattacks over two days. The documents note that he destroyed two firing points and over 20 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht.
Orunbek Yakubov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944 for repelling 15 enemy counterattacks over three days during the crossing of the Dnieper River.
Furthermore, he was awarded the medals "For Courage," "For the Defense of the Caucasus," and the Order of the Red Star.
