10 sailors killed in attack on ships in the Gulf of Hormuz — IMO

Against the backdrop of a sharp restriction of ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz, thousands of seafarers are stranded in difficult conditions in the Persian Gulf. The BBC reported this citing the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

It is noted that nearly 2,000 ships, with over 20,000 seafarers on board, are currently waiting to pass through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. They are anchored in waters near the Gulf states.

Since the conflict began, 21 attacks on commercial vessels have been recorded in the region. According to IMO data, these attacks have resulted in the deaths of 10 seafarers, with several others seriously injured. The organization stated that crews are facing shortages of food and essential supplies, fatigue, and severe psychological pressure.

International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that fragmented approaches to the current situation are insufficient and called on the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to establish humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of seafarers and the delivery of necessary aid.
