US President Donald Trump is sending his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad to hold negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This was reported by the Associated Press, citing the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Reuters that they will depart for Pakistan on April 25. According to her, US Vice President J.D. Vance, who conducted the first round of negotiations with Iran in April, may also travel to Islamabad if Washington deems it necessary.
The Iranian Foreign Minister has already arrived in Pakistan. According to Reuters sources, Araghchi does not plan to meet with US negotiators, and his visit will be brief. He intends to present his proposals to Pakistan, which are to be conveyed to the US. After that, Araghchi will head to Muscat (Oman) and Moscow.
Axios journalist Barak Ravid, citing sources, reports that US and Iranian negotiators may hold a bilateral meeting after first meeting separately with Pakistani mediators.
According to Axios sources, a trilateral meeting involving the US, Iran, and Pakistan is expected to take place on April 27.
On April 7, the US and Iran reached a temporary ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the war that has been ongoing since February 28. The parties held the first round of negotiations in Islamabad but failed to reach any agreement. Subsequently, the date for a new meeting was discussed at length, but Tehran representatives refused to hold negotiations.
