At least 14 school students were killed when the roof of a private tutoring center under construction collapsed in Lahore, eastern Pakistan. Another eight children sustained various injuries and were hospitalized. The Associated Press reported this.
According to police, rescue workers are continuing their search for those trapped under the rubble. Initial reports suggested that several more children might still be buried in the debris.
Law enforcement agencies have arrested the owner of the tutoring center and one other person in connection with the incident. Preliminary findings of the investigation indicate that the tutoring center was operating in an old building, and the roof of the unfinished second floor may have collapsed due to poor construction work.
Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also emphasized the need for strict adherence to construction safety requirements to prevent such tragedies.
In Pakistan, incidents related to building collapses occur periodically due to non-compliance with construction standards, use of substandard building materials, and violation of safety regulations.
