The United States is deploying thousands of its paratroopers to the Middle East.

Thousands of troops belonging to the elite 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army have begun arriving in the Middle East. Reuters reported this, citing two American officials.

It is noted that this event is taking place as U.S. President Donald Trump is considering next steps regarding a war with Iran.

The paratroopers, based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will join thousands of additional sailors, Marines, and special operations forces already deployed to the region. Approximately 2,500 Marines arrived in the Middle East over the weekend.

Anonymous sources told journalists that the exact location where the troops will be stationed has not yet been disclosed.

"The additional forces include headquarters elements of the 82nd Airborne Division, some logistics and other support units, and one combat brigade. A final decision to send troops to the Iranian side has not yet been made, but they will increase the capability for future operations in the region," Reuters quoted one official as saying.

It is reported that the military could be mobilized for several purposes in a war with Iran, particularly noting the possibility of seizing Kharg Island, which accounts for about 90% of Iran's oil exports.

"Any deployment of U.S. ground forces could pose serious political risks for Donald Trump, as the American public does not support a war against Iran, and the president's campaign promises envisioned not involving the U.S. in new conflicts in the Middle East," the report states.
