A trial has begun in the US over lawsuits against Meta, accusing the company of harming children and teenagers. Point.md reported this.
The states of California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey accuse Meta of deliberately using features on Facebook and Instagram designed to keep children and teenagers on the platforms for as long as possible.
The plaintiffs also claim that the company collected data from children under 13 without their parents' consent. Meta denies all the allegations.
According to the company's own calculations, it could theoretically face a fine of up to $1.4 trillion in this case. However, lawyers say the likelihood of such a large fine is very low.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Instagram head Adam Mosseri, and former company employees are expected to testify in court.
The outcome of the case could also require Meta to change certain features on Facebook and Instagram.
