In Kazakhstan, the new Constitution came into force on July 1. Its draft was approved by nearly 90 percent of votes in a referendum held in March. The new Constitution allows the current president, Qosim-Jo‘mart To‘qayev, to participate in the presidential election once again.
The country's bicameral parliament — the Senate and the Majlis — officially concluded its activities on June 30. As a result of the constitutional reform, a unicameral Qurultoy will be established in place of the bicameral parliament.
Also, within the framework of the reform, the position of vice president will be reinstated, and a new advisory body — the People's Council — will be established. Its members will be appointed by the president.
