Protests in Israel: thousands take to the streets against Netanyahu's government

On October 24, a protest demonstration was held in Tel Aviv, Israel, with the participation of thousands of people against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The protesters demanded an independent investigation into the shortcomings in the security system that failed to prevent the HAMAS attack on October 7, 2023, and that those responsible be held accountable.

The action was organized three days before the parliamentary election to be held on October 27. The demonstration was initiated by the October Council, formed by family members of the victims of the 2023 attack and the hostages.

The protesters marched from Rabin Square in Tel Aviv toward Hostages Square. They demanded that the government establish a state commission of inquiry into the security shortcomings that led to the October 7 attack.

In a statement published on the X social network before the demonstration, the October Council called the action an important stage in the three-year struggle to establish the truth and hold those responsible accountable.

It was noted that the Netanyahu government has been refusing to establish an independent state commission of inquiry. Instead, the government proposed creating a commission with the participation of representatives of the ruling coalition and the opposition in parliament. Opposition leaders, however, stated that they would not participate in the work of a commission formed by politicians.

According to The Times of Israel, a number of opposition political figures, including Yair Golan, Avigdor Liberman, Naftali Bennett, and Yair Lapid, also participated in the demonstration.
