Ukrainians will never forgive the surrender of Donbass — Zelenskyy

In an interview with Axios, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified his position regarding agreements on the Donbas region. According to the president, the Ukrainian people reject any peace agreement that envisions the unilateral withdrawal of troops from Donbas and the handover of the region to Russia.

"Emotionally, people will never forgive this. This is a part of our country — land, flag, and all citizens," Zelenskyy emphasized.

The Ukrainian leader also reiterated that the best way to achieve a breakthrough on the territorial issue is a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy reminded that any future agreement must be confirmed through a national referendum and said that if such an agreement only envisions the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas, it would be perceived as a surrender of sovereignty and citizens.

In the 37-minute phone interview with Axios, Zelenskyy also stressed that he was not pressured by the U.S. during the mediation efforts in Washington and that he is "not a person who gives up easily."
