In Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the new Supreme Leader.
According to the decision of the Council of Experts, he was officially confirmed as the country's third Supreme Leader.

The process of selecting the country's new Supreme Leader in Iran has concluded. According to the decision of the Assembly of Experts, the late leader's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been elected as the country's new Supreme Leader.
This was reported by the Reuters agency, citing a statement from the Assembly of Experts.
The statement said that Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei has been officially confirmed as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
The 56-year-old cleric and political figure has long been recognized as a key figure in Iran's political system. He is also noted for his close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to Iran's political system, the Supreme Leader holds the highest position in the state and has the final say in foreign policy, military strategy, and the country's major political decisions.
Publications report that the election of the new leader took place against the backdrop of statements made by Donald Trump. The U.S. President had previously stated that Washington intends to exert influence aimed at changing the country's political direction during Iran's process of selecting a new leader.
Additionally, Israeli officials have warned that if Iran's new leader continues the previous hardline policies, he could become a legitimate target for attacks.
