Against the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East, a number of airlines have once again reduced flights and increased airfare prices.

The German airline canceled thousands of flights due to fuel prices.

German airline Lufthansa has announced it will cut 20,000 short-haul flights during the summer season due to a sharp rise in aviation fuel prices, reports the BBC.

According to the company's statement, aviation fuel prices have doubled against the backdrop of the US-Israel and Iran conflict, leading to the restriction of some flights.

It is noted that other airlines, including Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines, have also temporarily canceled some flights or raised ticket prices to cover costs.

Experts do not rule out further flight reductions and another increase in airfare prices if the conflict continues.

According to information, nearly half of the aviation fuel supplied to Europe comes from the Persian Gulf region. Restrictions on shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, considered a main supply route, by Iran have impacted the price increase.

Furthermore, the Al-Zour oil refinery in Kuwait supplies approximately 10 percent of Europe's aviation fuel imports.

The International Energy Agency warned last week that aviation fuel reserves in Europe could run out in the short term. At the same time, some governments and airlines have stated that no serious supply disruptions are currently being observed.

While confirming the reduction of European routes, Lufthansa stated that long-haul international flights will be preserved. The company plans to save approximately 40,000 metric tons of aviation fuel through these measures.

Earlier, the airline announced it would accelerate the closure of its CityLine short-haul flight program in Europe and retire 27 aircraft. It was noted that high fuel prices and labor disputes are contributing to this.

According to company information, the initial 120 flight reductions have already been implemented, including routes from Frankfurt to Poland and Norway.
