Strait of Hormuz blockade: 45 million people at risk of food shortage
According to the UN, the passage of fertilizer-carrying vessels through the strait must be restored.
Nearly 45 million people living in developing countries may face food shortages due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The UN warned that such a situation could lead to a humanitarian crisis.
Jorge Moreira da Silva, Director of the UN Office for Project Services, said that at least 5-7 fertilizer-carrying ships must pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
He emphasized that fertilizer delivery is crucial for ensuring food security for developing countries. Otherwise, these countries could face a humanitarian crisis.
Da Silva stated that the conflict in the Middle East should not be a reason to halt humanitarian aid delivery. He called on Iran and the US to resolve the fertilizer delivery problem as quickly as possible, separately from the conflict agreement.
