At least six people died in India's Andhra Pradesh state as a result of Cyclone Arnab. On Thursday as well, power supply had not been restored in some areas along the country's eastern coast. Reuters reported this.
The Times of India newspaper, citing local officials, wrote that the death toll had reached nine. According to the information, people died as a result of electric shocks, falling trees, and the destruction of houses. However, the state government put the official death toll at six people.
The India Meteorological Department classified Cyclone Arnab as a "very severe tropical cyclone." It reached the coast of Andhra Pradesh in the early morning on Wednesday.
According to a statement by the state's chief minister, the cyclone damaged at least 15,000 power poles. Apart from Konaseema and West Godavari districts, power supply has been restored in most areas.
The minister emphasized that with the help of technologies, the areas where the cyclone could cause the greatest damage had been identified in advance, and through this it was possible to reduce the damage to people's lives and property.
Before the natural disaster approached, more than 180,000 people were evacuated to safe areas in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states. Some schools were closed, and some trains and flights were canceled.
Also, near the coast of Andhra Pradesh, a cargo ship sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands with 20 crew members ran aground. Due to unfavorable weather at sea, the ship remained in that location on Thursday as well.
