After the Argentine national team's defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, clashes occurred between fans and police in the center of Buenos Aires.
The incident took place around the Obelisk monument in the Argentine capital, where football celebrations are traditionally held. Thousands of fans had gathered in the area to watch the final match. The situation remained peaceful until midnight, but unrest began after a group of fans attempted to break through protective barriers.
Subsequently, some fans threw glass bottles and other objects at police officers. Law enforcement agencies used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Local media reported that images circulated showed various items scattered on the streets, as well as a police officer kicking a fan lying on the ground.
According to official reports, at least 15 people were detained following the unrest. Several others were injured, but no detailed information about their condition has been provided.
In the final match, Spain won 1-0 thanks to a goal scored by Ferran Torres in extra time, securing their second World Cup title in history.
The match was also remembered for disciplinary incidents. Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandes received a red card during the game. Leandro Paredes was sent off after the final whistle for an aggressive act against Spanish defender Eric García.
Meanwhile, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that a national holiday would be declared in the country to support the national team. The date of the celebration will be determined in consultation with the players and coaching staff.
